Princes Group get a tasty new SAP EWM system
Princes Group is an international food and drink group involved in the manufacture, import and distribution of branded and customer own-brand products. Customers include major supermarkets, convenience stores, foodservice operators, wholesale suppliers and other food manufacturers. Princes’ brands and products span over 20 different categories including fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, soups, pastes, pasta, cooking sauces, edible oils and a broad range of soft drinks sectors.
Princes needed a warehouse management system for a new 361,660 sq ft site in Bradford supporting circa 54,000 pallets in a fast moving, complex environment.
First, we helped Princes decide which flavour of warehouse management was best for them, SAP WM (Warehouse Management) or SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management). We used a balanced scorecard that evaluates both systems and shows which is the best fit for now, and in the future.
The scorecard indicated that EWM was the juiciest option for Princes because of it’s additional functionality in warehouse automation, yard management, case picking, wave picking and complex putaway. That settled, we implemented a greenfield site installation of SAP EWM.
It was important for Princes to keep operating 24/7, even if the core SAP ERP system goes offline. So we implemented their SAP EWM on a separate SCM server rather than as an add on to their existing ERP system.
Once the EWM system was up and running we designed a customer putaway strategy to optimise capacity and an error logging function which allowed for quick and easy resolution. We also added SAP EWM Process, and Layout, Oriented Storage Control functionality, meaning that processes such as two-step picking are more efficient.
The implementation was carried out while the warehouse itself was still being built so we had to act quickly to realign the proposed solution as the building developed. Despite these challenges we’re happy to say we exceeded expectations by going from blueprint to go-live in less than seven months.
A year later we returned to Princes to install two 530m automated conveyors to deliver stock from production, over a road and into their new warehouse. We installed the mammoth conveyor system all whilst Princes' manufacturing and warehousing all remained fully operational.
